MSPA fans, feel free to take the day off for this one, you probably already know all of this.
A forum adventure is relatively similar to an ask blog, especially mourneruntosheol. Actually, it's more like an ask blog is similar to a forum adventure, since forum adventures predate ask blogs by several years, if not a decade or more.
Essentially, the original poster (OP) of a thread will provide a scenario, people will reply with what the character should do next, and the OP will choose from the replies which action to take. Obviously, not all forum adventures fit this exact description, but that's the simple explanation.
If you're familiar with text-based adventure games, it's very similar to that. It's also similar to tabletop games (D&D, Pathfinder, etc). Forum adventures are essentially a Dungeon Master (OP) making a custom campaign for their players (the people who reply).
Still confused? Here are some forum adventures to check out that may help you understand better:
Please note that some of the above adventures (especially ones at the top of the list) are old and may be products of their time. As such, tread with caution and an understanding that you may see offensive content, including but not limited to: slurs (the r slur especially), casual racism, and homophobia.

- Jailbreak, and, in fact, the rest of the MS Paint Adventures. Yeah, we're getting Homestuck in this bitch. Actually, if you use a computer, ignore that first link and read it on the Unofficial Homestuck Collection instead.
- Ruby Quest (This is the original thread for the first part. To read the rest of the story, click here for the rest of the original threads or here for the Flash versions.)
- Prequel
- Moonstuck
- Awful Hospital
- Tiny Cat People (This is the original thread for the first act. To read the rest of the story, click here.)
- ask-isaac-reborn, from page 43 to page 71 of the chronological archive here (They quit after that though.)
- sburb.EXE (A Homestuck fan adventure, my current favorite actually. All the charm and humor of Homestuck proper with none of the flagrant ableism!)
- ...And more??? If you have a favorite forum adventure not listed here, send me a PM and I'll add it!
